    BVB spendet Million für Holocaust-Gedenkstätte

Klares politisches Signal vom BVB! Die Dortmunder unterstützen mit einer Million Euro den Ausbau der Holocaust-Gedenkstätte Yad Vashem.

This unique place also houses the world’s largest collection of objects from the Holocaust – 500,000 photographs, 210 million documents, letter, diaries, and drawings remind us of the 6 million Jews who were murdered by Nazi Germany.

In order to maintain, study, and exhibit these memorabilia for eternity, Yad Vashem is currently building the “New Shoah Heritage Campus“ (cost: 26 million euros).

Borussia Dortmund, Daimler, Deutsche Bahn, Deutsche Bank, and Volkswagen are supporting the ultra-modern construction in an unprecedented joint endeavor. On the initiative of the German Friends of Yad Vashem in Berlin, each company will donate one million euros.

Dr. Haim Gertner, Director of Yad Vashem Archives, says: “The ‘New Shoah Heritage Campus’ will, under ideal conditions and mostly underground, significantly expand the storage space of our vaults, where documents, artworks, and artefacts are kept. This will enable us to protect all kinds of objects, using the most modern technology, in order to guarantee their preservation. At the same time, we want to create a balance between the urgency of preservation and the necessity of exchange. The conservation laboratories therefore allow for insights into the experts’ work. At the lower level, the complex will also house two galleries in which we can share our collections with the public.“

“The Nazis tried not only to murder the Jews, but also to erase their identity, their remembrance, their culture, and their heritage,” says Avner Shalev, the chairman of Yad Vashem. “In the case of many Jews, the only things that remained were artworks, personal belongings, photos, and documents that were preserved under the most difficult of circumstances and handed to Yad Vashem for safekeeping in order to immortalize the stories of their creators and owners. By conserving and exhibiting this intellectual and spiritual wealth, the ‘New Shoah Heritage Campus’ will give the victims their voices and identities back, making sure they are never forgotten.“

Kai Diekmann, chairman of the German Friends of Yad Vashem: “With more than one million visitors per year, Yad Vashem is the world-wide center of commemoration for the victims of the National Socialist tyranny. In order to fulfill the tasks that this involves, Yad Vashem needs the support of many. I am very happy and thank Borussia Dortmund, Daimler, Deutsche Bahn, Deutsche Bank, and Volkswagen for supporting the construction of the ‘New Shoah Heritage Campus’ with their engagement, thus helping to preserve the remembrance of the Holocaust and the commemoration of its victims for future generations.“
